  1. I am a Coatesville resident since 2006. I live in region 1. All 4 of my children are enrolled in Coatesville schools (11/12, 9/10, SBMS, and Rainbow)
I am very concerned about safety, especially at the high school. I provide behavior and emotional support for a student at the 9/10 building. Each day I work with my student, I am concerned about his safety as well as mine. Horseplay in the hallways, "slap-boxing", objects being thrown at each other-all provide an unsafe environment for learning for EVERYONE. My student and I have been jostled around several times in the stairwell because of students' behavior there. On at least three occasions, my student and I have been almost hit by objects being thrown, such as a water bottle, a stick of antiperspirant, or a backpack. There are security guards, but all they can do is tell students to "head to class". My student is quite uncomfortable traversing the hallways during transition time, because of all this unsafe, unruly behavior students are allowed to display.

I really commend the teachers at 9/10. They do the absolute best they can to deal with disruptions to learning by following through , writing up students for dangerous behavior or referring to the office for administration to handle it. Many times, these students are sent right back-but why? Has that been affective, conferencing with the student, who promises not do it again? It's not working-student with history of disruption continue to disrupt. We need a better system in place to make learning conducive to all and to help the disruptors to be better learners.

  2. My boys were jumped in the 9/10 center. One was an honors student who is now in college, (the other I will discuss later)....however it was a long hard road for him and he never made the SATs and lost his education and his scholarship because of CASD!!! He had anxiety/PTSD, we asked for help multiple times and were refused! Guidance was to help with check-ins, but Ms Norman never called him down. (however in a prior meeting when this all happened she asked me to continue to go to the board meetings because she was working in fear! She is an adult, he is the minor!!) He missed school bc of his anxiety and then I get a truancy letter from Mr Chenger who knew exactly what was going on!! and now I am the criminal here because I am advocating for my son to get FAPE and be safe in school, go figure! I bring in the note for missing school, we ask for help once again, the day of return they refuse him help and do not comply so at this point they kicked him out of school and told him to do online. They credited him for partial credit, he lost his classes he majored in and I was threatened he would not get any credits at all if he did not comply.... He had to take an art class to make up his credit and finish his Spanish coarse on line where he got a 56 and his online teacher said it was as if he never even had Spanish 2 in the 9/10. Mr MacNamara violated my parental rights by having my son in meetings WITHOUT me, even though I told him he did not have my permission without me! He violated my parental rights to my son, he has a 504 and I am not there and he goes ahead with the meeting and under oath he admits my son was very upset because he was told he was and I quote "only the messenger" So they kick out of school and cause even more trauma by kicking him out of the sport he has loved and played since he was 5yo Mr MacNarmara, Mr Chenger and Ms Norman ALL failed my son! my son said to me "no one in school cares about me! I requested multiple meetings with the VP, Principle and Guidance counsellor Ms Noram thru many calls and emails to get in writing since he had a 504. they ALL refused to grant a meeting!! This environment is not healthy for anyone especially the kids! Talk about misconduct among the admins, its a disaster..... Under oath, the VP said he was ordered by the district attorney not to open my sons Doctors absence notes which were a direct request from his MD to help his Medical and emotional needs, he stated he had to give it to Judy Shopp the district attorney brought in by her friend the superintendent. We never got a 504 meeting and they broke the law! and the students who did the assaults got to stay in school were they continued to terrorize the other kids and be extremely disruptive to the school. I had to get a restraining order from the DA to have this student removed as he had multiple police records including assault/harassment which the school knew about, (the school has a Juvenile Probation officer located in school) yet my son who is honors, who wants to go to college, who wants to give back and was loved by all his teachers, he gets thrown under the bus, kicked out of school and of off school sports!! With the school being run by this way, its no wonder students who want to learn left, it will continue to be a failure all the way around for all the students unless we get rid of the root cause of this district and it starts at the top.

  3. my child goes to SBMS. The disruptive classroom behaviors, disrespect toward teachers, daily fights, lock downs have impeded my son's education and emotional well being. I have voiced this concern along with the schools inability to follow my child's IEP. My concerns have fallen on deaf ears. Ms Shimon is not willing to discuss the behavior problems at SBMS, in fact minimizes it. The administration tries to keep these out of control behaviors quiet. And quickly will say kids exaggerate or misinform their parents. The lock down in April is a perfect example. There was a "code red" lockdown. Students know this is a serious lockdown. Kids pushed into the closest classroom and hide in closets. My son states kids were crying, and they started praying to God that they were not going to die. Apparently there was a fight that started in the cafeteria that led to the hall. There was rumor of a fight, and a student pulled a knife. Parents recieve an email with no information about the cause of the lock down, just states students did a great job. As kids started telling their parents about this fight and possible knife, a second email is put out from Ms Shimon that there was no fight, no weapon just inappropriate behavior. So... all these kids are lying, and a high alert lock down for inappropriate behavior? My son has developed adjustment/anxiety disorder due to his school environment. The daily fights, bullying, classroom disruptions have negatively affected my child. I have to send my child with learning disabilities into this environment everyday knowing it is causing him harm emotionally and academically. My request for alternative placement has been ignored and not a topic for discussion at my IEP meetings. My child has learning disabilities who wants to learn. He has never been a behavior problem but has to endure the disruptive behaviors of other students. Not acceptable. in fact it violates my son's legal rights for a free and appropriate education. This school district has also been out of compliance of my son's IEP. Information kept from me such as my child being without a case manager for at least a month and a half, missing his 1:1 aide without being notified. I had to address both issues after finding out on my own. I could go on and on with the non compliance of the IEP. Let me be clear when I say my son's teachers do the best they can with what they have to work with. Our teachers are overloaded with behavior disruptions that make it impossible to teach, large number of IEP students for one teacher, no support from superintendent and building administration, teachers are silenced and intimidated into keep their professional opinions to themselves. I could go on and on with the about how the superintendent and administration has failed my child along with may others.

  4. Time for change. Nothing personal. It's about the money, performance and transparency.
